5 things you didn’t know about roulette
The classics never go out of style. This is no different with roulette, ‘the king of casino games’, which has always been a crowd pleaser. The ever-popular game appeals both to experienced players and ‘rookies’. But no matter how experienced you may be, we bet you didn’t know these five facts about roulette…
Roulette was originally called ‘roly-poly’
Famous French philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal had a lifelong fascination with perpetual motion machines. Inspired by an English game called roly-poly, he invented roulette in the 18th century. The ‘spinning wheel’ thus appears to originate in England.
Roulette became big in Monaco
Monaco used to be one of Europe’s poorest states before the arrival of casinos – and roulette. When brothers Louis and François Blanc opened their casino in Monte-Carlo, they changed Monaco forever. Fun fact: the Blanc brothers didn’t plan to wind up in Monaco at first. They originally targeted Germany, where roulette was already very popular, but had to abandon that idea when Germany banned gambling.
Did you know the Blanc brothers were also the ones to add 0 to the roulette wheel, giving casinos an extra edge over players?
Turning 10 euros into 12,960 euros in two turns
There are different kinds of bet placements in roulette. Each placement has a name derived from French. When you bet ‘en plein’, you place your bets on a single number. When you bet ‘cheval’, you bet on two adjacent numbers, while ‘carré’ means you bet on four numbers that form a square on the playing field.
Roulette is a game of chance designed for quick success. Place 10 euros on a number and then bet all your earnings once more. You just earned more than 11,000 euros in two turns!
4.The ‘European wheel’ was invented in Germany
The European roulette wheel has 36 slots and one zero. The zero is green, the remaining boxes are either black or red. You can bet on one number or try your luck betting on multiple numbers or placements. You can also bet on black or red.
5.European roulette vs. American roulette
European roulette offers a better chance of winning than American roulette, because the American roulette wheel has not one but two zeros. That means your chances of betting on a winning number are 1 in 37 (2.70%) with European roulette and 2 in 38 (5.26%) with American roulette.
