Roulette was originally called ‘roly-poly’

Famous French philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal had a lifelong fascination with perpetual motion machines. Inspired by an English game called roly-poly, he invented roulette in the 18th century. The ‘spinning wheel’ thus appears to originate in England.

Roulette became big in Monaco

Monaco used to be one of Europe’s poorest states before the arrival of casinos – and roulette. When brothers Louis and François Blanc opened their casino in Monte-Carlo, they changed Monaco forever. Fun fact: the Blanc brothers didn’t plan to wind up in Monaco at first.
