8 March is your day: International Women’s Day. Time to turn the spotlight on strong women like you. And to spare a thought for women who’re not so lucky, as well. The theme this year is #BeBoldForChange. It’s a call for women’s achievements – both great and small – to be put in the spotlight. Everywhere from your living room to the political barricades.
Who run the world? Girls!
International Women’s Day is the perfect opportunity to put remarkable women and girls on a pedestal. Think of Marleen Temmerman, who is still working hard for women’s health. Or Bana, a seven-year-old girl from Syria who used Twitter to send out news about the battle in Aleppo. And Beyoncé, whose pop music is a tribute to black culture. But you don’t even need to look that far. Think of the female role models in your own environment: your friends, mother, colleagues, etc. All those superwomen merit extra attention on 8 March.
Equality could take another 170 years
While a lot of women are conquering the world in the cultural, economic and political spheres, we still have a long way to go. In global terms women still earn, on average, half of what men earn. Yet they generally work longer, if you count the unpaid hours spent on housework and childcare. If you brought all the government ministers in the world together at a party, they would fight to dance a slow, because only 18 % are women. And the percentage of women managers is stuck at 26. At this rate it will take another 170 years before we’ve eliminated the inequalities between men and women.
